Smart Public Toilets in Matapōuri

Matapōuri is a small Northland coastal town that swells with visitors in summer, creating heavy demand for reliable public toilets. The chosen site sits near dunes and an estuary, with limited space and high cultural and environmental sensitivity—so the solution had to be compact, low on ground disturbance, and free of on-site discharge.

Three-cubicle composting public toilet in Matapōuri with accessible ramp; commissioned by Whangarei District Council.

Challenge

Matapōuri Beach with people sunbathing, swimming, and relaxing—busy day on the sand.

Key requirements included a strict no-discharge mandate (zero leachate to ground or stormwater) and no new water take, while still handling peak holiday loads without odour. The coastal environment called for corrosion-resistant materials and minimal ground disturbance, and the layout needed to be fully accessible with safe, CPTED-aligned operation after dark—all within a small footprint.

Solution

LooCube™ delivered a three-cubicle amenity (two unisex, one accessible) built from modular FRP panels that arrive flat-packed for fast assembly and low site impact. Each cubicle connects to a continuous-composting, zero-leachate system that contains and manages moisture internally—nothing is discharged to ground or waterways. A tall passive/assisted vent maintains constant airflow for odour control, while low-watt, thermostatically controlled heating boosts composting performance during colder months and winter peaks. Slip-resistant access, compliant clearances, durable anti-graffiti finishes, and dusk-to-dawn lighting round out a low-maintenance, low-water facility that fits the setting and performs through the busiest season.
